In this lesson you will learn the definition of plagiarism, the common mistakes in using information and how to avoid inadvertantly plagiarizing some else's work.

Explore

In this day of digital resources, the temptation to copy and paste information into the student's work is high.  To avoid plagiarizing, students should learn to cite sources.  View the video below to get a better understanding of plagairism in the 21st century.

Explain

Plagiarism is defined as directly quoting any work, writing, video, art, etc. that is not your original thought.  Students must be able to identify when plagiarism is occuring.  Check out the article below to identify what constitutes plagiarism by clicking the graphic below.

So the question becomes, how do you cite your sources when gathering resources and creating original works?   It is said it is better to over cite rather than fail to cite a source.  View the video on how to avoid plagiarsm and how to properly cite sources.

Enhance/ Extend

Enhnace: You should use the following resource, IRIS literacy tutorial, to practice identifying plagiarism.  This online practice site gives you scenarios and you are to determine whether plagiarism has occured or not occured.

Extend: Now it is your turn.  Take what you know about plagiarism.  Create 3 scenarios where a minimum of two of the scenarios contain an instance of plagiarism.  Be sure to identify what the learner could have done to prevent the plagiarism.  You may work in groups of two, but each group member must submit to the dropbox independently.  You may choose to use any online collaboration tool of your choice.  Click the image below for some popular online collaboration sites.

Evaluate

For your final project you are to create a public service announcement about ethical use of information.  You can create a video, a storyboard, a billboard or a print ad.  Make sure your project is eye catching, contains information about what plagiarism is and how to best avoid plagiarizing other people's work.  You will submit this public service announcement as a group.
